Last night was our weekly tournament and it was the biggest yet. Not quite as big as the events at pokerstars.co.uk but we upped the buyin from $5 to $10 this quarter thinking it might thin the field when in fact the field has grown. Last night 39 guys showed up to play the $10 + $5 rebuy game and I want to go over a few interesting hands.
Not much happened for me until I rebought the first (and only) time. I sat back down with 3,000 chips and went all in with A[clubs]10[clubs] and I was called by 3 other people! When the hands were flipped over I realize I was actually ahead! I was called by A8, KQ, and KJ. The flop came out K 6 A, and it held up by some miracle. I was suddenly up to T$12,000 and doing alright.
My chip count began slipping after the rebuy period and I could pick up at pots. I called a raise with AK offsuit from the small blind but was force to fold from a big bet on the flop of 10 J J.
About an hour 45 minutes into the tournament with blinds at 300/600 I was sitting with T$6,000 chips. A tight player raised from middle position and I called from the small blind ith 77. I figured him for a higher pocket pair, but I had good position to make a stop and go.
A stop and go is a play where you have position ahead of your opponent and decide to go all-in on most any flop, forcing them to the decision. I called the preflop raise of T$1,800 and made a pot-sized all in with my remaining T$4,200 on the flop of A 3 4. He said something like “Is this a joke?” and mucked QQ face up. No joke here.
The was about the extent of my night, soon after that I got stuck in a pot with 33 against KK and was crippled. I lost of the first hand of a new table AJ to AK and hit the rail. For a $20 investment, the winner was taking home over $250, one good week and I’ll have enough cash for the quarter, let’s hope I can improve on my 0-2 record so far.
